this event
In January 2004,
a research project entitled Screening methods for Water data
InFormaTion in support to the implementation of the Water
Framework Directive or SWIFT-WFD was launched by a group of
40 different organisations for a three year period. The main
objective of this EU-funded research project is the development
and testing of robust quality control and validation methods
for existing and emerging tools and methods of relevance to
the Water Framework Directive monitoring requirements .
Key activities have been developed in the context of the SWIFT-WFD
project to:
- Identify the potential of using new methods and tools
for monitoring physical-chemical quality elements in order
to design and implement the new monitoring requirements
under the WFD
- Assess the socio-economic impact of a wider use of these
methods and tools would have on actors involved in their
development, dissemination and use
- These activities have been based on practical case studies
developed for selected river basins in five countries, (Czech
Republic, France, Germany, Latvia and the United-Kingdom),
linking whenever possible to other activities of the SWIFT-WFD
project aimed at testing selected methods and tools under
real field conditions
THE MAIN OBJECTIVES
OF THE EUROPEAN WORKSHOP
The main objectives
of the workshop are:
1. To present the results of the assessments of new methods
and tools for water quality measurements obtained in the different
case studies developed under the SWIFT-WFD project (i.e. Czech
Republic, France, Germany, Latvia, United-Kingdom)
2. To get feedback from workshop participants with regards
to the importance of these results and their relevance to
situations and conditions from EU countries not investigated
by the SWIFT-WFD project (in terms of the content but also
in terms of priorities)
3. To identify issues that might need further analysis and
research in the short-term (within the scope of the SWIFT-WFD
research project and finalisation of the case studies) and
medium-term (e.g. in the context of other research projects).
TARGET AUDIENCE
The main target
audience is experts from ministries and environmental agencies
involved in the design and implementation of water quality
monitoring in particular for the WFD. In addition, representatives
from water supply companies, environmental NGOs, universities
and research organisations will be invited to the workshop.
Totally, around 50 participants from
different EU countries are expected at the workshop.
