The
Water Framework Directive came into force in December 2000. Until
December 2003, the Member States have to implement the Directive.
In Germany, the Federal Government as well as the German Federal
States are responsible for the implementation of the Directive.
Numerous pilot studies and projects have been initiated by the German
Federal Government and by the Federal States in order to test and
support the implementation process.
The
Working Group of the Federal States on water problems (LAWA) aims
at formulating solutions and putting forward recommendations for
the implementation of questions arising in the areas of water management
and water legislation. The results obtained from this work form
a basis for the implementation of a standardised water management
system within the Federal States. On behalf of the LAWA, a technical
working meeting was carried out in February 2001 in order to give
an overview of the different pilot studies and projects in the context
of the Water Framework Directive. This event is now succeeded
by a workshop which is focussing on the aspects that are to be covered
in the report (outlined in annexes II and III of the Water Framework
Directive) that is to be finalised by end 2004. Representatives
of the sub-basins in the German Federal States will report on results
on the basis of different topics and discuss the actual state of
affairs.
The
conference is provided for representatives of the German Federal
States, for representatives of the German Federal Environmental
Ministry, the German Federal Ministry of Consumer Protection, Food
and Agriculture, the German Federal Environmental Agency, the German
Federal Agency for Nature Conservation as well as to representatives
of neighbour States.
